About The Golden Standard

Reviews you can trust, for the years that matter most

The Golden Standard is an independent review site for the golden years — and for the people who love them.

We started with a simple observation: the internet is full of product reviews, but almost none of them are written with this stage of life in mind. A “best hearing aids” list written by a 28-year-old tech blogger doesn’t ask whether the smartphone app has readable fonts. A medical alert roundup doesn’t ask whether customer service will patiently walk your 80-year-old mother through setup. We do.

What we cover

We review the products and services that matter most in this stage of life: hearing aids, medical alert systems, home safety products, and — as we grow — the everyday gear that makes life easier, safer, and more enjoyable in the golden years.

How we work

  • Research-based, not guesswork. Our rankings are built on independent lab results (from respected outfits like HearAdvisor and HearingTracker), published trial and warranty terms, verified pricing, and evaluation criteria that reflect how our readers actually use these products: readable instructions, straightforward setup, patient customer service, and real-world safety.
  • No pay-for-placement. Ever. Companies cannot pay to be ranked, reviewed, or recommended. Our standing policy: if we ever earn a commission through an affiliate link, it will never influence what we recommend — and every article carries a disclosure saying so.
  • Written for real people. No jargon, no condescension, no filler. If your eyes glaze over, we’ve failed.
  • Honest about downsides. Every product has trade-offs. We tell you what they are, because a recommendation you can’t trust isn’t worth anything.
  • We correct our mistakes. Prices change, companies rename products, and sometimes we get something wrong. When that happens, we fix it quickly and transparently. Spotted an error? Tell us — accuracy is the whole point of this site.

A note on our limits

We’re reviewers and researchers, not doctors, audiologists, or contractors. Our articles carry disclaimers where health or safety is involved, and we mean them: nothing here replaces professional advice. What we can do is help you walk into that appointment — or that purchase — informed and confident.

Who’s behind this

The Golden Standard is independently owned and operated — no corporate parent, no investors to please. We’re building the review site we want our own parents to read.
